HIV :

HIV

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease of the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

This condition progressively reduces the effectiveness of the immune system and leaves individuals susceptible to opportunistic infections and tumors. HIV is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid, and breast milk. AIDS is now a pandemic. AIDS was first recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1981 and its cause, HIV, identified in the early 1980s.

Although treatments for AIDS and HIV can slow the course of the disease, there is currently no vaccine or cure. Antiretroviral treatment reduces both the mortality and the morbidity of HIV infection, but these drugs are expensive and routine access to antiretroviral medication is not available in all countries.

GRECALTES Still Fighting against HIV/ AIDS ::
A. HIV/AIDS awareness program:

One voluntary Counseling and Testing Centre (VCT) was run by GRECALTES from 2002 to 2004. So far we have counseled 200 patients and among them 8 were found HIV positive. Now, we are conducting awareness generation program in the community to reach the flying female sex workers, migratory labour.
B. Completed Several research project on HIV/ AIDS :

Project Goal:
To arrest the spread of the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in West Bengal & reduce the STD/RTI infection through integration of prevention and treatment Program.

Main Objectives:
1. to prevent new infection
2. to arrest spreading of HIV infection.

Approach: Participatory learning & actions.
Strategies:
1. Conduct massive awareness campaign among the common people, sex workers, school & college students and roadside “dhaba”, brothel, resort etc;
2. Improving knowledge, attitudes & behaviors of the target population group;
3. Creating a supporting environment;
4. Promoting the use of reproductive & sexual health services;
5. Ensuring the provision of services in the geography where it is needed;
6. Involve volunteers for promoting and counseling the programmers;

Target Population:
Young and adolescent section of the community, Migrant labor, Sex workers in the project area.

Project area: Diamond Harbor Sub division of District: South 24 Parganas; West Bengal, INDIA. It will include nine blocks mainly Diamond Harbour-1, Diamond Harbour-2, Falta, Kulpi, Mograhat-1, Mograhat-2, Mandirbazar, Mathurapur-1, Mathurapur-2.

Approx. number of target population/vulnerable group to be covered: 6,00,000.

Proposed Activities:
1. Identification of significant number of flying sex workers and migrant labor.
2. Cluster level discussions, meetings etc.
3. Identifying volunteers.
4. Identifying community groups.
5. Conducting school education.
6. Formation of a common platform where the participants will be the representatives from all local NGOs, CBOs, Youth Clubs and other agencies (facilitator)
7. Formation of cluster committee.
8. Sensitization of the Administrative Employees of the resorts of the target area
9. Rehabilitation of flying sex workers with the help of community based organizations.

Anticipated Outputs:
1. Significant improvement in awareness regarding HIV/AIDS as documented by the KAP surveys – at least doubling of baseline values by two years.
2. Number of potential migrants identified and sensitized.
3. Number of actual migrants identified and followed through.
4. Significant increase in the utilization of HIV/ AIDS preventions services among the sex workers and general population.
5. Improvement in the practice of healthy behavior & life-style amongst the target population.
6. Reduction in HIV/AIDS and STD related complications & impoverizations.

Monitoring and Evaluation:
The progress of the project will be monitored with respect to the implementation of the work plan and the respective proposed outputs being achieved. The success of the project can be objectively evaluated by comparing the base line KAP survey parameters with the Final KAP survey parameters in addition to the extent to which the proposed outputs have been realized.

Approach would be combining implementation with evaluation i.e. taking research objectives into account in the design: randomization, staged implementation, baseline survey, better understanding of process and specific data collection.

Although Grecaltes completed a lots of projects with impressive outputs, but we never stop our service. The employees and members of Grecaltes never work for money. Our main aim is to secure human being from dangerous diseases.

Globally cancer is emerging as a amjor problem both in developed as well as developing countries. This dreaded disease has been indentified to beone of the leading cause of death worldwide. Even in this 21st century human beings are treated to be pitiable by others, which cause a great psichological trauma to the patient and the family too. Cancer neurosis is worse than even cardiac neurosis among patients causing poor quality of life. It is a matter of great regret that in our country about 80% cancer cases are detected in an advanced stage only when practically the curative therapy is not at all possible. Only palliative care could be of some help. To fight with the disease the fast possible way to make people aware of various signs and symptoms and methods of prevention of cancer as well as the environment protection.
A lead and initiative was taken by government of india through the formation of national cancer control programme in the year 1975. In the year 1984-85 it was revised with emphasis on primary prevention and early detection of cancer. But even this effort also could not attain the goal upto the level of expectation and ultimately the policy has once again tracked back in 2005.
In such a scenario foccus has been established in 2010-11 with the mission of achieving success in its endeavour to increase awareness amongst the masses about cancer prevention and environmental protection.

"Preventing GDM among Women Living
in Slum" with the following objective:

To create awareness among the under
privileged slum women at reproductive
age group about diabetes focusing on
gestational diabetes, promote healthy
life style among them and detect the
'At Risk"women for Diabetes through
BMI measurement and other risk factors.
